What Is Die-Cutting? Explain Its Process, Advantages, And Types

In the packaging industry, customization plays an important role in obtaining the desired pattern of designs. To make your products visually appealing, die cutting method is used to craft different designs and images on the material to make packaging boxes that look alluring to customers. Do you know what is die cutting? Let’s get into it. Die cutting is a process in which custom designs and images from the desired material like cardboard, metal etc are cut into different styles and sizes with the help of a die and sharp plates.

Die cutting method is mostly used to make custom labels, packaging boxes etc. These dies are used in various packaging processes, for instance, embossing, debossing, and foil stamping.  These dies create attractive packaging that makes the box stand out in the market. In this blog, you will learn the in-depth die-cutting process along with the advantages, processes and types.

Process Of Die Cutting

Before getting right into the die-cutting process completely you need to understand what a die is and how it is made. A die is a tool which is made of wood, steel blades and rubber (for safety). A die comes in various shapes and sizes depending upon its use. The procedure of die cutting starts with making the die of the desired shape before putting it on the press. At this point, your dieline for packaging should be ready to start the die-cutting process.

Now let’s get into the die-cutting process. After the creation and selection of the die the procedure of die cutting consists of 7 steps each step has its own significance in the process.

Process Of Die Cutting

Step 1: The material is selected for cutting  based on its thickness and flexibility. The most common types of material used are corrugated, cardboard, kraft paper, etc.

Step 2: Prepare the material to fit in the die by trimming it properly in the shape and size of the die.

Step 3: Then the die is set on top of the die-cutting machine, once it is done properly, the die is placed on the top of the machine.

Step 4: When everything is set in place, then the machine is started to achieve the desired result. The cutting process may be repeated a few times to get the perfect results.

Step 5: If there is any extra material left, cut it from the material as it is not part of it.

Step 6: Thoroughly inspect the material, if any defect is detected correct it immediately.

Step 7: The final product is cut and shipped or prepared for other processes

Different Types Of Die-Cutting  Machines

Digital Die Cutter

Digital die-cutting machines don’t use dies. Instead, they use lasers and blades that are controlled and operated through a computer. In a digital die-cutting machine, you can make designs from scratch with the help of software and then export them to the machine for processing.

Rotary Die Cutter

Rotary die cutters are operated electronically. It uses rotating cylindrical dies which are called die stations. The material is fed into the station, where the rotary tool cust the parts from the sheet.

Flatbed Die Cutter

Flatbed die cutter uses steel rules that align with the design provided, after that the hydraulic puts pressure on the die while moving it downward to get the material.
